the nuances of trip planning
June 12, 2003
I've spent the better part of the day looking into travel insurance and plane fares for next year. This has been the most boring day of my life. There are two things that have kept me sane. 1) this guy:

and 2) ridiculous exclusions for travel insurance, such as:

THIS INSURANCE DOES NOT COVER ANY LOSS CAUSED BY OR RESULTING FROM:
>> Sickness or disease except as provided for in the policy
>> War or any act of war whether declared or not
>> ... etc, etc ...
>> Contests of speed
>> Skydiving, hang gliding, parachuting (not including parasailing)

EXCLUSIONS: breakage of brittle or fragile articles, musical instruments, radios and similar property; wear and tear, gradual deterioration; insects or vermin; inherent vice or damage; confiscation or expropriation by order of any government; radioactive contamination; war or any act of war whether declared or not; theft or pilferage while left unattended in any vehicle; mysterious disappearance. (i wonder how this last one is defined)

Accidental Death & Dismemberment If You sustain an Injury on the Trip which results in death or loss of limb, eyesight, speech, or hearing within 365 days of the date of the accident, the Insurer will pay the largest applicable amount as follows: the benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Coverages for death, loss of speech and hearing in both ears, or loss of any combination of two hands, feet, or eyes; one-half the benefit amount for loss of any one of these; and one-quarter the benefit amount for loss of thumb and index finger of the same hand. (???) ...The Air Common Carrier benefit applies only to Injury sustained by You (1) while as a passenger in, on, boarding, or alighting from an Air Common Carrier; and/or (2) being struck or run down by an Air Common Carrier. (that last clause is a relief)

p.s. I still need tickets to five countries, and I need to be insured for an entire year. If you know something I should, let me know.

Weird. You would think that would be something they'd have to deal with a lot.

A friend of mine here in Beijing is using insurance from www.specialtyrisk.com that is geared for travellers.

I'm on the "Global Medical Insurance" program from IMG. If I'm not mistaken, it's geared towards people who are living in one country, but I'm pretty sure they have traveller's insurance too.

i can't offer you insurance, but if you pay me what you'd pay these bitchass insurance companies, i'll accompany you throughout your travels and be your personal bodyguard. i mean, thats a really fucking good deal! i bet www.specialtyrisk.com isn't gonna offer that kind of protection. not to mention the additional entertainment and excitment i would offer you. plus my knowlege of all things global will definately come in handy. did you even know i had that kind of knowledge? yeah well i do. Language skills: working knowledge of the english language, some really mangled forgotten spanish, the ability to say several key words in africaans, i can sing along to most of the portuguese words sung by Bebel Gilberto and guess at their meanings and i can navigate the capetown minibus system.
other talents include: working knowledge of almost 3 fairly decent jokes and the ability to stick my entire hand in my mouth.
BRING IT.
